Koni's products on Abarth

When it comes to improving the way your vehicle feels and performs on the road, few upgrades make as noticeable a difference as quality shock absorbers. That’s where Koni has made its name.

For decades, Koni has been a leader in suspension design, crafting high-performance shock absorbers that bring out the best in everyday driving. Whether you’re in a sporty performance car, a capable 4×4 tackling varied surfaces, or a daily commuter, the right shocks can dramatically enhance comfort, stability and confidence behind the wheel. From smoothing out rougher roads, to providing responsive control through corners, Koni’s road-focused solutions are engineered to suit a broad range of vehicles and driving styles.

In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at the Koni shock absorber range — exploring the different models. We’ll be covering what makes each one unique, and how to choose the right set for your vehicle. Koni offers options designed to elevate your driving experience without compromising everyday usability. Whether it’s balanced handling for spirited road driving, improved comfort for long journeys, or enhanced control for a 4×4 on mixed terrain, they have it all.

What does a shock absorber do?

A shock absorber controls the movement of your vehicle’s suspension to keep the tyres firmly in contact with the road.

When you drive over bumps, potholes or uneven surfaces, the springs compress and rebound. Without shock absorbers, the springs would continue to bounce, making the car unstable and uncomfortable. The shock absorber dampens this motion by controlling how quickly the suspension moves up and down.

Adjustable Damping

A variety of shock absorbers in the Koni range will offer the ability to adjust the damping of the shock absorbers.

Adjustable damping allows drivers or engineers to fine-tune how firm or soft the spring resistance is. Softer damping can improve ride comfort by allowing the suspension to absorb bumps more easily. Firmer damping can enhance stability and handling by reducing body movement during cornering, braking, or high-speed driving. By adjusting the damping, the suspension can be optimized for different conditions, such as everyday road use, carrying heavier loads, or performance driving.

Whilst discussing each shock absorber Koni has to offer, we will mention the different types of damping adjustments are available, if any. Below you can find each one that will be mentioned:

External Adjustment – This type of adjustment can be made with a shock absorber fitted on the car. This is done by means of a plastic adjuster that fits on top of the shock absorber, that you turn either clockwise or anticlockwise.

Internal Adjustment – This type of adjustment can only be made when the shock absorber is off the car. You compress the piston rod, and then twist it either clockwise or anticlockwise to adjust the damping.

Button Adjustment – This type of adjustment can only be made when the shock absorber is off the car. Once off the car, you press a button on the shock absorber, which allows you to twist the piston rod either clockwise or anticlockwise to adjust the damping.

Active Technology Adjustment – This type of adjustment is the FSD technology that’s in the Special-Active and some Heavy Track & Raid shock absorbers. This adjustment cannot be changed manually, as the technology dynamically changes the damping as you drive.

STR.T.

Koni STR.T shock absorbers

The Koni STR.T shock absorbers are engineered to bring a performance-oriented upgrade to standard dampers. These sharpen handling, reduce body roll, and improve road holding. This gives the car a more planted and confident feel. They’re non-adjustable, direct replacements that work seamlessly with OEM springs or popular performance lowering springs (up to 40 mm). With a reputation for reliable reaction speed and solid build quality, STR.T shocks deliver real-world performance gains you’ll feel every time you drive. Whether you’re weaving through country backroads, or simply enjoying a smoother, more controlled commute, there will be a difference.

The STR.T shock absorber can be purchased individually or as part of a suspension kit with H&R lowering springs. Suspension kits like this are a popular upgrade, meaning you can upgrade your shock absorbers and add a little bit of lowering for the stance you’re after in one installation.

Classic

The Koni Classic shock absorbers bring modern damper technology to vintage and classic vehicles. They combine their contemporary engineering with the traditional look and feel many owners want. Designed and developed specifically for each application, these shocks offer improved ride comfort, sharper handling and more precise steering response than the original dampers fitted to older cars. They come in either a red or black finish. They feature the iconic KONI “wing” logo, and allow for adjustable damping, designed for fine‑tuning of suspension behaviour. Just like the Special shock absorbers the Classic also has two types of damping adjustment, which are detailed below.

The two adjustment types are; Internal Adjustment and Button Adjustment.

Sport

Koni Sport shock absorbers

These Koni Sport shock absorbers are specifically engineered with enhanced damping characteristics, tailored to high-performance. These deliver more responsive steering, reduced body roll and tighter control of suspension movements compared with standard shocks. Therefore giving your car a more planted, confident feel on twisty roads and around town. They’re designed to work well with both standard and mild lowering springs up to 35 mm. What really sets the Sport shock absorbers apart is that they have damping adjustment, allowing you to tailor the damping to your personal driving style or road condition.

There are three types of damping adjustment on the Sport shock absorbers – the Koni engineers have designed each shock absorber for specific vehicle applications. Your vehicle design will determine which damping adjustment you get.

The three adjustment types are; External Adjustment, Internal Adjustment and Button Adjustment.

Special

The Koni Special shock absorbers are designed as a performance‑oriented upgrade for everyday driving, offering noticeable improvements in ride quality, handling and vehicle stability over standard replacement dampers. Developed using Koni’s proven engineering, and further tailored specifically for each vehicle application, these are known for a long service life and excellent reliability. The damping can be adjusted on the Special shock absorbers, there are two adjustment types.

Special-Active

The Koni Special-Active shock absorber

The Koni Special-Active shock absorbers represent one of the most technically sophisticated options in the range. Using Koni’s patented Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology, these dampers automatically adapt their damping characteristics to suit changing road conditions and driving inputs. This results in giving you comfort over rough surfaces and firmness during spirited driving, all without electronic sensors or controls. These are for the enthusiast who wants an OE upgrade, that blends comfort and performance without compromise.

The one adjustment type is; Active Technology Adjustment.

Raid

The Koni Raid shock absorbers are purpose‑built heavy‑duty dampers designed to tackle the diverse demands of modern 4×4s, SUVs and light trucks, from rough country roads to long overland expeditions. Developed with robust twin‑tube construction, thick 2.5 mm outer tube and a large 70mm reservoir, Raid shock absorbers deliver enhanced stability, safety and grip both on‑ and off‑road.  The majority of applications for the Raid shock absorber offer damping adjustability, however there are some applications where manual adjustability is not possible. There are three damping adjustment types for the Raid, and depending on the application will determine which one you get.

Heavy Track

The Koni Heavy Track shock absorber is Koni’s robust, all‑terrain suspension solution for 4×4s, SUVs and light trucks that need to perform comfortably on‑road, and confidently off‑road. Heavy Track shock absorbers are engineered with rugged construction and high‑quality materials, to deliver greater stability, road‑holding grip and safety across a wide range of conditions. They feature damping adjustability like many in the Koni range, allowing you to adjust rebound. However, they have four different types of adjustments, and some vehicle applications unfortunately have no adjustability due to the design. The four types of damping adjustments are below;

Finally

This concludes the wide range of shock absorbers Koni has to offer – hopefully you now have a better understanding of their range, what they are for, the differences between them and how they can enhance your driving experience.
